Steven Rose started studying Argentine Tango in 2002 with Gustavo and Jessica Hornos (2011 first place Argentine Tango stage champions in New York). Steven ‘s Argentine Tango training is built on his martial arts training and a lifetime of musical study. He is very passionate about his martial arts and music, and in Argentine Tango they are realized in a single art. For the last 10 years he has been dancing four nights a week at various bay area milongas.
Steven has been studying traditional internal- style Chinese boxing for 40 years. His school is in Santa Rosa -- Whirling Wind Tai Chi Chuan. His martial training also includes 10 years Ju Jitsu. There is a very close connection between the two disciplines of Martial Arts and Argentine Tango.
At an early age Steven started studying piano and clarinet. He went on to graduate from the California Institute of the Arts majoring in music theory and composition as well as studying harpsichord. While at Cal Arts he studied world music specializing in the dancing and drumming of the Ewe-speaking people of Ghana. More recently he studied Japanese drumming and dance with Sonoma County Taiko. For the past 30 years he has played sousaphone in Robert Young’s traditional jazz band, The Eldorado Syncapators. He continues to study the keyboard music of baroque composers on his newly re-built Neupert Harpsichord.
Steven believes the study of Tango is three-fold: (1) Learning the music, (2) Learning the physical techniques including posture, balance, embrace, and (3) Learning how to connect with a partner and dance to the music.
Steven’s life has been dedicated to teaching various esoteric arts and as such, has developed sensitivity to the needs of the students. With a profound respect for the art, he can lead the way for those wanting to learn Argentine Tango.
